Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has indicated that he might invite Alex Ferguson to deliver Manchester United’s team talk before their eagerly awaited Premier League meeting with Liverpool.

The legendary former United manager has acted as Solskjaer’s mentor since the Norwegian took over as the club’s interim boss in December.

Ferguson took charge of United against Liverpool on 64 occasions during his trophy-laden 26 years at Old Trafford, winning 29 times.

The Scot has been a regular at Old Trafford since Solskjaer’s appointment as caretaker in December and was in attendance for Monday’s 2-0 FA Cup win at Chelsea.

Indeed, Ferguson famously stated that his aim when he took over at Old Trafford back in 1986 was to “knock Liverpool right off their f*cking perch” and end the Reds’ dominance of English football at the time.

Asked if he had any plans to indulge in Ferguson-style mind games with his Liverpool counterpart, Jurgen Klopp, Solskjaer said “Nah. I don’t think Jurgen Klopp will read what I say and I’m not gonna read what he says. That’s for further down the line, I would think.”

“But he [Ferguson] would be welcome to have his talk to the players if the gaffer wanted to because we know how much it meant to him to overtake Liverpool [in terms of titles won]. Our players know what this game means for everyone at Manchester United.”

Solskjaer has compared the Liverpool game to United’s Champions League last-16 tie with Paris Saint-Germain, which remains his only defeat in 13 games in charge.

He believes his players have to show they have learned from that experience in a similar environment on Sunday.

“We have to perform better than we did against PSG because it’s a big game and a big team,” he said. “Suddenly we’re not underdogs anymore.”

The Red Devils entertain Jurgen Klopp’s men at Old Trafford this weekend and will be desperate to put a dent in their rivals’ title bid, as well as aiding their bid for the top four.
