A former senior police officer has been convicted and jailed for causing grievous harm to a hawker.
The accused, Gregory Wabwire, was charged in Makadara Law Court before Senior Principal Magistrate, Angelo Kithinji has been sentenced to 3 years in jail with an option of paying a fine of Ksh. 100,000.
In convicting the accused on January 13 the magistrate said that the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that he assaulted Dominic Munyoki causing him grievous harm.
The court heard that Wabwire arrested Munyoki on December 31, 2011 and took him to the Chief’s camp at Huruma estate for allegedly refusing to remove a handcart that was blocking the road.
The officer had ordered the hawker to move the handcart but the man declined and explained that he was not the owner.
This angered the officer who took Munyoki to the Chief’s camp where he is said to have beaten him severely with a metal bar causing him several head injuries and a fracture on the leg.
At the time of the assault, Wabwire was the AP officer in charge of Mathare Division.
