In an erroneous birthday wish sent to ‘the Duke of Kabeteshire’ formally known as Sir. Charles Njonjo, Moses Wetangula stumbled on his choice of words.

The senator for Bungoma Moses Wetangula wrote;
“Happy birthday Mzee Charles Mugabe Njonjo. Congratulations for turning 99. I read about you when I was a kid and grew up to be not only a professional colleague but also a friend. May you live to blow more candles,” wrote the Senator last week.

The likening of the former attorney general Sir Charles Njonjo to former president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe just seemed to irk some netizens.

“How can you refer to your friend as ‘mugabe’ ? Let me refresh your memory, seems you have grown old, Weta, he is ‘mugane’ not ‘mugabe’. Congratulations to Sir Charles Mugane Njonjo for turning 99. God bless you,” wrote one Twitter user.

“I guess Mugabe means longevity’…long life..Blessing ..Happy Belated..” added Herine Owuor.

Weta, after realizing his mistake, quickly issued an apology and clarified that there was no deliberate pun.

“Sorry to Mzee Charles Njonjo. I meant Mugane which is his mid-name and not “Mugabe” which isn’t!” he said.
