Museveni endorsed for a sixth term

Uganda’s National Resistance Movement (NRM) ruling party has endorsed President Yoweri Museveni for re-election, which would make room for his sixth term as president.

The endorsement overrules a 2017 Bill that was signed, to set the age limit for a president at 75. Museveni is on the other hand just a year shy of the proposed limit, at 74, and will be 77 when Uganda will be conducting its next general elections, in 2021.

This as he will in 2021 be marking 35 years as Uganda’s president since 1986.

While Uganda’s Constitutional Court in July last year ruled in favour of removing the limit. Last month, the Supreme Court began hearing a petition to challenge this decision.

Museveni on the other hand while running for a fifth term in 2016 said it was not the right time for him to leave, as he still had work to do.
