What You Didn’t Know About Nigeria Elections

Nigeria elections have never been an easy journey as almost every Nigerian vote since independence has been dogged by conflict and allegations of rigging.

On Saturday Nigeria was set to have its general elections but that big project never saw the light of the day as the INEC announced the last minute elections Postponement.

In 2015 the elections were crowded with the crisis of rigging, a reason that saw Muhammadu Buhari, now 76, become the first candidate in the nation’s history to topple a sitting president through the ballot box

But the former military ruler has presided over four years of dreary growth and fallen short on a pledge to quell rampant corruption. His critics nicknamed him “Baba Go-Slow” — a reference to his age and sluggish response to crises.

Buhari’s bid for the second term has now been set back by a week. His major rival, the opposition leader, Atiku Abubakar feels that the postponed elections are fueled by Buhari as a ploy to cut the vote count by demoralizing the voters.

These two wealthy old men, Buhari 76, and Abubakar 72 are hungry for power and have set a stiff competition which makes them major horses in the presidential race.

On 23rd Feb the two are expecting to face other 71 rivals who failed on several previous occasions to secure the presidency.
