Nigeria delays Presidential Elections for a week citing logistics problems

Nigeria’s Presidential elections were put on hold on Saturday to February 23, 2019 by the Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

This was announcement  was unexpected,  five hours until the polls opened for the two day exercise.

According to the sources, it was revealed that one reason for delaying the crucial vote was the logistics problem. On the other hand, election materials were yet to be delivered to all parts of the country.

“Proceeding with the election as scheduled is no longer feasible,” commission chairman Mahmood Yakubu said.

The parliamentary vote will also take place on the 23rd day of February as governorship, state assembly and federal area council elections have been rescheduled to Saturday 9 March.

The two main political factions All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had earlier on accused each other of trying to manipulate the elections.

More to it, a couple of INEC offices have been set on fire and electronic smart card readers and voter cards destroyed during the campaign season.
