It Was a Difficult Decision, INEC Speaks on Election Postponement

The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has openly stated how difficult it was for it to postpone the general elections to next week.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu who briefed the press on Saturday in Abuja said the commission had met on Friday, February 15,  2019, and reviewed its preparations for the 2019 General Elections planned for Saturday, February 16,  2019,  and Saturday, March 2, 2019.

“Following a careful review of the implementation of its logistics and operational plan and the determination to conduct free, fair and credible elections, the Commission came to the conclusion that proceeding with the elections as scheduled is no longer feasible, said Yakubu.

He added that it was a difficult move but the commission had to go for it.

“This was a difficult decision for the Commission to take, but necessary for the successful delivery of the elections and the consolidation of our democracy.

Prof Yakubu also stated that the commission has scheduled a meeting on Saturday 16 in the afternoon with various stakeholders at the International Conference Centre, Abuja to discuss issues surrounding the development.

The Commission will meet key stakeholders to update them on this development at 2pm on Saturday, 16th February 2019 at the Abuja lnternational Conference Centre”, he added.

This comes after the INEC chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu postponed the elections that were slated to happen on Saturday, February 16.

The elections will now be held on Saturday, February 23.
