Two months after Jose Mourinho was sacked, Manchester United have revealed the massive amount of money it cost them to get rid of the former Chelsea and Real Madrid coach.

Many questioned how much United had to pay Mourinho after he was relieved of his duties, and according to the club’s latest quarterly financial report, his departure from the club, along with six members of his coaching staff, cost the Red Devils a total of £19.6 million as “compensation to the former manager and certain members of the coaching staff for loss of office”.

United revealed the figures in their second quarter financial results.

Mourinho was sacked after a run of poor results, culminating in a 3-1 defeat by Liverpool, that left them 11 points off fourth place in the Premier League.

Despite the former Real Madrid coach’s sacking, the club posted record revenues in the final three months of 2018, with total earnings of £208.6 million (R3.7 billion), according to United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

“The appointment of Ole and Mike (Phelan) as caretaker manager and assistant manager, working with Kieran (McKenna), Michael (Carrick) and Emilio (Alvarez), has had a positive impact throughout the club,” he was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

“We’re delighted with the improvement in the team’s performances since December and we look forward to a strong finish to the 2018/19 season.”

Mourinho was in charge of United for 144 games, winning 84, drawing 31 and losing 29.
