CS Balala Terms EACC Raid Claims as Baseless and Malicious

Tourism CS Najib Balala has dismissed claims that EACC raided his home last Monday over an alleged Sh100m contract. According to some local reports, it said that Balala was being investigated for allegedly awarding the contract, through single sourcing, to The American Society of Travel Agents to offer unspecified services during expos held in Nairobi two years ago.

Another report quoted  that detectives raided his Nairobi office and his homes in Nairobi, Vipingo in Kilifi, and Mombasa where crucial documents were recovered. But in a tweet on Friday, Balala denied the claims saying that his legal team were handling the matter.

“No raids have taken place at my house as claimed by The Standard Newspaper today, the journalist was aware prior to publishing the report of the same,” Balala said.

Balala said the EACC inquiry on the Expo that took place at KICC in February 2017 has been an ongoing process which the Ministry of Tourism has fully cooperated since the start of the inquiry.

According to a statement from the EACC dated February 13, Balala was only asked to record a statement. “To facilitate our investigation you are kindly invited for an interview and statement recording at our Integrity Centre on February 18 at 9 am, our officers Francis Wafula and Kimutai Langat will be available for the exercise.” said Director of Investigations Abdi Mohamud.

There was another report that the CS contracted the company during the 2016/2017 financial year to offer various services during the circuit of exhibitions held at the KICC. One event was held from February 23 to 26, 2017. The contract was for hosting various expos under a programme to aid in the recovery of the Tourism docket whose performance had been struggling.

According to those involved in the investigations, the firm was not among those pre-qualified during the contract period and neither did the department have that budget for the year.
