Manchester United and Paris St Germain have been charged by UEFA following illegal incidents during Tuesday’s last-16 first leg at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils face two charges after their supporters were accused of blocking stairways and throwing objects toward Angel Di Maria during the game, which ended 2-0 to PSG.

The former United was jeered by the home supporters right from the start of the match, having endured an underwhelming spell at the club in the 2014-15 season. He, however, impressed during the match and set the two PSG goals.

Prior to the goals, Di Maria was waiting to take a corner in the first half and several bottles were thrown in his direction – the Argentine reacting by picking one up and pretending to drink from it.

A bottle of water was subsequently thrown at Di Maria again, and an item landed at the feet of United full-back Luke Shaw in the first half of the game.

On the other hand, PSG have been hit by four different counts with the travelling fans alleged to have set off fireworks, thrown objects and committed acts of damage along with other crowd disturbances.

Around 800 seats were damaged in the away end, while the netting that protects the disabled fans in front of the away section was ripped off.

In addition, a hole was punched into the roof of a tram by supporters attending the match.

“Our fans created a great atmosphere getting behind the team last night. PSG fans played their part but some of their behaviour clearly went too far,” a United supporter told Sky Sports.

The case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body on February 28.
