Man attempts suicide at Nyali Bridge, Mombasa

Sometimes we reach a breaking point in life where we feel as though the world is against us and we have nothing left to live for. We may never know what someone else is going through, and we may also never understand what makes him/ her do some things.

Such is the case of a man in Lamu who threw himself over Nyali bridge in Mombasa. The man — said to be in his 40s — was rescued after he threw himself into the Indian Ocean early Thursday morning.

The reason(s) for his action remain unknown, though he was heard saying: “I want to kill myself”.

Witnesses say the man jumped into the water body after deliberating for a while on top of Nyali Bridge. The 10am incident prompted rescuers into action.

He was retrieved 100 meters away from the shore, which residents familiar with the depth of the ocean, say was deep end.

Some of the onlookers, however, claim that the man is skilled in swimming, given he managed to float, with his head clearly visible from afar.

Red Cross officials arrived at the scene and rushed him to Coast General Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.

Police say they have launched an investigation into the incident.
