Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp faces a touchline ban or a fine after being charged by the Football Association for comments he made about referee Kevin Friend after his side’s Premier League clash at West Ham on February 4.

He also exchanged some not so sweet words with the West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini  following the full-time whistle and then went onto the pitch to remonstrate with Friend.

Klopp intimated after the 1-1 draw that Friend’s second half performance had been affected by an assistant referee’s mistake for Sadio Mane’s opening goal.

This is not the first time Klopp has been charged this season.

Klopp has until 6pm on February 18 to respond to the charge.

He was fined £8,000 for running onto the Anfield pitch to celebrate Divock Origi’s stoppage-time winning goal against Everton in December.

“We had good moments, coming through the channels and scored the goal, which I’ve now been told is offside,” Klopp told Sky Sports. “This explains a little bit the second half, because I think the referee knew at half-time.”

“He knew it for sure at half-time, and then you saw a lot of strange situations. They were not decisive but just rhythm breakers. That obviously didn’t help us.

“If I’ve made a mistake in the first half, I don’t want to open the gap even more as a human being.”

The FA confirmed Klopp had been charged for questioning “the integrity” of the match official.

“Jurgen Klopp has today been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3,” said the FA in a statement.

Liverpool drew 1-1 with West Ham.

“It is alleged that comments he made in a post-match interview following Liverpool’s league game against West Ham United on February 4, 2019, breached Rule E3(1) as they questioned the integrity of the match referee and/or implied bias,” added the statement.

He has until 6pm on February 18, 2019 to respond to the charge.

However, if Klopp is found guilty he could be banned from the touchline when they travel to Manchester United on February 24.
