How Handshake might see Sonko out of City Hall

Do you still think Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko should be impeached? Well, then how do you think it should happen when the County boss has taken control of everything at City Hall? Political commentator Tony Gachoka on Wednesday night called for the impeachment of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko during the premiere of his newly launched political show, Point Blank.

In an interview with Reform Strategist Professor Peter Kagwanja that aired on KTN News, Gachoka appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta to get rid of Sonko in order for the county to become the catalyst for the Big Four Agenda.

According to Gachoka, Sonko was running the county in an incoherent and ineffective way.

“Kenyatta is presiding over a country where we have arguably one of the most dysfunctional county governments in the history of mankind. You’re talking about a county that has over 60 per cent of the resources of Kenya. He has two cabinet secretaries that are confirmed, everybody else has gone. The deputy governor’s position is not there!” He posed.

He added that Kenyatta needed to take advantage of the handshake with ODM leader Raila Odinga and have the Jubilee and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM)  Members of County Assembly (MCA) come together and impeach the governor.

However, Prof Kagwanja was of the view that Sonko was a phenomenon of democracy.

“Sonko was democratically elected with the majority of votes. Now the lesson for Kenya is not just about the quality of election, but the quality of leaders as well. Remember choices have consequences,” he remarked.

Furthermore, Kagwanja suggested that perhaps Gachoka needed to invite Sonko so that they could have a discussion.

And just like the show’s name suggests, Gachoka was point blank in responding, stating that Sonko was not of the same intellectual capacity as himself thus could not have any meaningful discussions together.

Among other issues discussed in the one-hour show included Deputy William Ruto’s address at Chatham House, Uhuru’s succession debate and Uhuru’s new found stature in Africa’s political arena.

The show is geared at confronting a host of hard issues and looking beyond the headlines.
