5 TV Sets Costed Techinical University of Mombasa KES 4.5 millions

Officials at the Technical University of Mombasa are in hot soup for purchasing highly priced TV sets that costed a worrying amount of Kes 4.5 millions.

This was revealed in an audit by the Auditor General Edward Ouko tabled by the Majority leader Aden Duale, the report indicates that the institution procured five T.V sets at an exaggerated price which is under question.

In defense for the purchase in question, the institution said they bought the recently trendy Smart Tvs currently in the market, the university bought each TV Ksh 910,689. The majority Aden Duale while tabling the report further informed the members of the House that the electronic devices were procured through requests for quotations, which is contrary to the requirements of the Public Procurement and Disposal Act, 2005.

The Auditor general’s reveal that the institution ordered for 70 Inch Television sets but instead 65inch Tv were delivered which caused more doubt on the said purchase. In reality the average price of a 65-inch TV in Kenya is Ksh 150,000 which means the five sets the University bought should have cost approximately Ksh 750,000.

However, some section of the auditor general’s report stressed that the issue is still in court. The same institution is also on the spot for spending overspending a whooping Ksh294 million on personal emoluments which authorities say would have been spent in improving service delivery and catering for other needs that are still wanting.
