Why Ngilu Has Been Chosen to Join Nigeria Election Observer Mission

Kitui Governor and NARC leader Charity Kaluki Ngilu is in Nigeria as part of powerful international election observer mission for the nation’s presidential and National Assembly elections, which will be conducted on Saturday.

Mrs. Charity Ngilu joined a group of 38 delegations led by retired president of Botswana Festus Mogae, which will be serving under the American based National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the International Republican Institute (IRI).

Ngilu is the only Kenyan political leader to be part of the delegation after nomination by the NDI and the IRI.

The question that now remains is why Ngilu?

Replying in a press conference, the office of the governor said that Ngilu was considered because she is the senior-most female political leader in the country, who has served in various elective capacities.

“Governor Ngilu has been a public servant for more than 27 years, as Member of Parliament for Kitui Central Constituency for four consecutive terms, from 1992 to 2013, and as a Cabinet secretary in the national government of from 2002 to 2015,” the statement said.

It is also reported that she is the leader of National Rainbow Coalition and was the first woman to ever run for president in Kenya.

She left on Sunday for Nigeria and will be attending the ceremony for the signing of the National Peace Accord between the two main contenders; President Muhammadu Buhari and former vice president Atiku Abubakar.

The signing will be done at the Abuja Conference Centrem to ensure that the stakeholders commit to accepting the results that the Independent National Electoral Commission will announce.

The nation was charged following the heated campaigns especially with the two contestants, which even saw the suspension of the Chief Justice who should be responsible for settling election disputes.

Nigeria was marred by protests from the opposition, which even made Ms Clinton to cancel her trip to the country.
