PHOTOS: Rare pictures of black leopard captured in Laikipia

The rare black leopard was sported in Loisaba Conservancy in Laikipia.

The black leopard is said to have been spotted in 2018 and Burrard Lucas, a wildlife photographer, came to Kenya trying to take pictures and footages.

After meeting with locals who had seen the animals, and following leopard tracks, Burrard-Lucas set up cameras that included wireless motion sensors, in the hope of photographing the animals at night.

Camera set to take pictures

“As I scrolled through the images on the back of the camera, I paused and peered at the photograph below in incomprehension … a pair of eyes surrounded by inky darkness … a black leopard! I couldn’t believe it and it took a few days before it sank in that I had achieved my dream,” Will Burrard-Lucas wrote on his photography blog.

The last black leopard is said to have been seen in Ethiopia in the year 1909 which is a century ago.

The black leopard is as a result of homozygous recessive for melanin just like albinism or human beings.
