Muslims clerics refuse government events on Friday

 

Muslim clerics in Lamu  have decried the seemingly increasing number of government events in the county on Fridays.

The clerics say that a majority of the residents in Lamu are Muslims, and the appetite of holding official government functions in the county is interfering with their official day of worship.

Only last Friday was the Cabinet Secretary of Water Simon Chelugui was in Lamu to launch a water project. The Friday before that, saw Stephen Ikua, the Secretary of Administration in the State Department of Public Works  in the area to launching the construction and rehabilitation of jetties.

The  chairperson fr the Interfaith Council of Clerics, Lamu branch, Mohamed Abdulkadir said that the government was deliberately trying to shut out worship in the region by conducting national functions in the area.

Lamu elders said that they will sensitize the public to ignore and refuse to attend to any government events that will be held in the area on Fridays.
