Tupate Haki Yetu! Over 15,000 Workers Down Their Tools and Boycott Sonko’s Office- This is What They Have to Say

Governor Sonko is certainly one busy man today!

This comes after a massive halt of operations in the County by more than 15,000 city workers who downed their tools to demand answers over the delay of their salary increments.

Initially, the salary workers had been promised a 15 to 20% salary increment as per the agreement that was signed in May of 2017, which Sonko had assured them that it would be implemented by January.

As a matter of fact, Sonko had communicated in December last year that the salary increments would be given to all City workers per the signing of the Collective Bargaining Agreement in January.

Nevertheless, the implementation of this agreement has been quite a tedious affair, dragging on for the past month.

A letter delivered to Sonko’s office by the City Workers stated that the workers were aggravated with the fact that the Governor’s office was yet to accord the implementation of the CBA.

Secondly, the boycott would only be halted once the county offices implement the CBA.

Interestingly, the agreement had stated that the increment was supposed to take place during the 2017/2018 financial year.

But this never actualized despite the County setting aside over Kshs 800 million to accommodate for the CBA’s promises.
