Paris Saint-Germain winger Angel Di Maria has transmitted contrasting feelings about his return to Old Trafford tonight.

The 30-year was signed by Louis van Gaal in 2014 and spent only one underwhelming season where he only scored 4 goals out of 32 matches.

At the time, the purchase of the Argentine from European champions Real Madrid was a statement signing for United – and he was immediately handed the famous number seven shirt at the club.

He started his spell at the club well, scoring in United’s first win of the campaign against Queen Park Rangers. However a hamstring injury shortly after set the tone for the remainder of his short lived United career.

The former Real Madrid man struggled under the rigidity of Van Gaal’s reign, and left United fans wondering where the world-class talent, which they thought they were getting, was.

While speaking to France Bleu, Di Maria said,

“I only stayed one year, it was not the best time of my career, or rather I was not allowed to spend my best time.”

“There were complications with the coach of the time. But thank God, I was able to come to PSG and demonstrate again who I was,” he added while suggesting that Van Gaal’s methods prevented him from expressing himself at United.

Di Maria is expected to start for PSG, who are without Edinson Cavani and Neymar for their Champions League round-of-16 first leg, at United on Tuesday night.

“I was asking him some questions about Manchester United,” his teammate Julian Draxler said about Di Maria’s return to Manchester. “I won’t tell you what he said but he will be ready for tomorrow.

“He’s a big player. He has a lot of respect for the club (United), there’s nothing terrible in what he said but it was between me and him, so I won’t tell you right now.

“He’s in good form, we’ll need him tomorrow, especially without Cavani and Neymar, hopefully he’ll have a great performance tomorrow.”
