Deputy President William Ruto has finally admitted that his Weston Hotel sits on a piece of land illegally acquired.

Ruto made the admission during his interview with BBC  on a popular ‘Hard talk’ show hosted by Stephen Sackur. The DP said he innocently bought the land from someone who had obtained it without following due procedures.

The host posed the question to Ruto followng the controversy that has surrounded his hotel and the manner in which it was acquired.

Sackur, during the interview posed: “Tell me about the Weston Hotel, which you own, which is worth an awful amount of money, and which is sitting on illegally acquired land,”

in his response the DP relied on the finding of the National Land Commission (NLC) report to distance himself from having engaged in the illegal acquisition of land knowingly.

“The National Land Commission (NLC) has made a finding that Weston was an innocent purchaser for value from somebody who got it illegally,” the DP responded.

He added that he was doing everything in his power to make sure the illegalities were corrected.

Ruto also pointed out that he would be demanding payment from the organisation from which he purchased the land.

“Preparations have been made constitutionally to restore that land to Kenya Civil Aviation Authority by demanding that those who sold the land to us must pay,” Ruto stated.

The interviewer also took issue with Ruto’s financial muscles questioning his source of wealth. They engaged in a back and forth debate discussing the DP’s wealth. At some point, Ruto asked the journalist to do his home work suggesting that he seemed to be behind the news on that matter.

“That information is available in public domain. I encourage you to Google and find out what William Ruto owns. I am prepared to tell you where to find that information, Sackur.”

“Do you think that information you are telling me makes any sense?” wondered Sackur.

The DP replied, “Of course, it does. It doesn’t make sense to you?

Sackur explained, “Not really, because you do not want to tell me how much you are worth.

“Why don’t you do your homework.” Responded Ruto.
