Should the Kenyan Government call off it’s military operations in Somalia?

It has been argued that Kenya’s military presence has been the catalyst to the numerous terrorist attacks that have lately been witnessed in the Country.

The International Community has time and again directed it’s attention to Kenya whenever a terrorist attack is reported.

The Dusit D2 attack made things even bad for Kenya and despite the fact that the government was able to deal with the attackers accordingly, questions still continue to rise on the Government’s preparedness in dealing with terror activities.

DP Ruto was tasked with answering the thorny question on Terrorism by BBC’s Stephen Sackur, who hosts the HARDtalk show.

Ruto said that Terrorism is an international challenge and that No country in the world has ever claimed to eliminate terrorism.

Ruto was however quick to point out that Kenya is dealing with the challenge at hand. Ruto referred to the Dusit D2 attack and highlighted how Government’s security agencies responded on time and worked round the clock to ensure that the armed gunmen were eliminated and effects of the attack minimized.

“If the response of the Dusit D2 attack was anything to go by, the response time was seven minutes, all systems were there. In fact, in our opinion, we scuttled what these characters wanted to achieve and minimised what they managed to achieve,”Said Ruto.

Ruto went on to state that Kenyan Military Presence in Somalia is indefinite and that Kenyan Troops will only leave the war-torn country once Somalia is safe because insecurity in Somalia affects Peace in Kenya.

“We have taken the position that this is not a Kenyan decision to make. This is a Kenyan and international decision. We are responsible partners under Amisom. We will work with other countries, the initiative under the UN, to make sure we secure Somalia. We have vested interest as

“Until Somalia is safe, it will be reckless for us to walk away from a threat that threatens our country,” he added.
