Why Marsabit residents served their elected leaders with dirty drinking water

Following the acute water shortage in Garissa County, residents decided to serve their elected leaders dirty water in drinking water bottles during a meeting in the county. This is in protest of their laxity in solving water problem in the county.

The residents want an urgent action taken to safeguard their families from the problem, several residents lamented that they have been compelled to walk for miles in order to fetch water for their daily use.

They claimed that their children have been run over by moving motorists while looking for places where they can fetch the rare commodity.

Garissa Water and Sewerage Company acting managing director Ahmed Adan said the fast-growing town has made it difficult to ensure there is enough water for all. Adan said the county administration has been supportive and has given them resources to ensure residents get clean water.

In 2014, Garissa Water and Sewerage Company said it loses more than Sh5 million a day due to vandalisim of water pipes, then managing director Idriss Mohamed said. He said the board replaces vandalised pipes at Bulla Tawakal and Bulla Mzuri almost weekly and every two weeks at Modika and Bulla Sheikh.

The residents have previously held numerous peaceful protests against Gawasco and the county government over the water shortage but little has been done to resolve the crises.
