What to Expect from Parliament as it Resume Sittings

There is more to expect from the National Assembly and Senate as they resume sittings this Tuesday for the third session after the 2017 general elections.

The two houses resume their sittings after a month-long Christmas recess.

The expectations from Kenyans are much more from the legislators including Statistics bill, which is awaiting publication.

The Statistics bill is seen by many to be of great significance and most probably will be given highest priority since it is significant to the national census, which will be held in August.

It involves an amendment to the Statistics Act of 2006, which established the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) responsible for the collecting, compiling, analyzing, publishing and disseminating statistical information, and coordinating national statistics system.

Also, the Cabinet Secretary of Treasury will be presenting Budget Policy Statement (BPS) to Mps on 15th February, which outlines the government’s expenditure and measures of collecting revenues and deficits.

Still on the budget, Mps will prioritize to pass the IEBC Amendment bill, which is aimed at providing mechanism for the commission for hiring new commissioner whenever a vacancy is left.

Legislators will also be looking to amend the Land Value Index Laws, which addresses matters of land compensation by offering negotiated valuation that will reduce the cost th help the state to roll out projects faster.

Among other bills to be taken into consideration by the legislators include; Statute Law Miscellaneous (Amendment) bill No 2 which will see the amendment of 15 pieces of legislation, Health bill and Energy bill.

Delayed bills will also be taken into great consideration. For instance, Physical Planning Bill, which was to be passed five years of the constitution implementation.

Finally, there is a concern that was raised by Elgeiyo Marakwet senator, Kipchumba Murkomen- a bill that will provide the mechanism of appointing a Deputy Governor in case a vacancy is left.

The bill by Kipchumba will also see county assemblies getting a Deputy Speaker.
