US Embassy Kenya sued by security company over dues worth Ksh 1 billion

Kenya Kazi (KK) security guards have moved to court against the United States embassy in Nairobi claiming for compensation for unlawful termination.

About 358 security guard claim that the embassy owes them dues to the tune of Sh1 billion.

Through their lawyers Charles Waweru, Abednego Mutua and Charles Oluoch, the guards appeared at the Milimani Law Courts adding that the courts had also awarded them compensation in March 2013.

The court heard that the US embassy hired the firm to provide security for its embassy headquarters in Nairobi and to residences of American officials as well as diplomats working in Kenya pursuant to their specifications in 2002.

In addition they noted that they have been in battle with the embassy since then.

Some of the issues raised in court included  aspects of union representation, recognition of union payment of overtime and commuter allowances.

They also accuse the embassy of failing to disburse Sh10.4 million that was released by the US Federal Government but the money never reached the guards, instead they were issued with letters of dismissal.
