Many clubs could be effected by a major rule change slated to occur in both the Champions League and Europa League next season. With reports suggesting that UEFA is set to scrap the away goal rule, which has been the source of controversy for a number of years, the most watched cup could have a massive change next season from the convention system.

The away-goal rule was introduced in the late 1960s and comes into effect if a tie is drawn on aggregate after two legs and has been a mainstay in UEFA competitions.

The UEFA Executive Committee will meet in Rome on Wednesday to discuss the potential change although an immediate decision is not expected, as reported by Irish Mirror.

The away goal rule was initially introduced to counter the disadvantages faced by travelling clubs such as travel stress, non-standardised match balls and lack of travelling supporters.

However, modern football has meant the landscape of football has now significantly changed and as a result the need for an away goal rule is being seriously questioned.

Another rule expected to affect teams is on the number of eligible players.

According to UEFA, each of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 hopefuls had been allowed to register a maximum of three new eligible players. Unlike previous seasons, however, it no longer matters if those players have already played in the competition for another club, or for another club still in the competition.

This paves way for players to compete for two different clubs in the same European cup competition this season.

The governing body have also revealed a fourth substitute will be allowed in extra time of knockout ties and that 12 substitutes can be named in the finals.

In addition, 23 players, rather than usual 18, will be permitted for the match sheet in the UEFA Champions League final, UEFA Europa League final and UEFA Super Cup, as reported by Mirror.
