Klopp Orders Summer Signings After Expressing January Transfer Woes

Jurgen Klopp has told Liverpool to bring in some defensive signings this summer after what a report described as a “disastrous” January transfer window.

The Reds have seen their lead at the summit of the Premier League usurped by the relentless pressure mounted on them by reigning champions Manchester City, and while Liverpool have a match in hand, dropped points against Leicester and West Ham suggest they are feeling the heat.

Paul Ince has told the Reds some of their senior stars must step up if they are not to wilt at a crucial stage.

Liverpool’s cause has not been helped by a string of injuries at a crucial stage, with Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum, Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dejan Lovren all missing out lately, leaving midfield cog James Milner forced to play at right-back.

And, according to The Sun – which admittedly does not have the best relationship with the city – Klopp was left frustrated by Liverpool’s failure to act on his wish to bring in defensive reinforcements this month.

The paper writes: ‘Klopp will look to strengthen his back-up behind first-choice centre-backs Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez when the Premier League title challenge concludes in May.

‘Before the January window opened Klopp said he would “keep the door open” for new arrivals.

‘[Sporting director Michael] Edwards monitors the market for players coming available but the club did not make a January signing, unlike a year ago when Van Dijk arrived and made an instant impact.’

The paper also highlights the club’s huge mistake in allowing Nathaniel Clyne to join Bournemouth on loan, something Jamie Carragher was also quick to highlight during Monday Night Football.

“I said about Manchester United having a better squad than Liverpool,” Carragher said.

“Maybe some people thought that was a strange thing to say. But I think we’re seeing little signs of it.

“The right-back situation, Klopp’s made a big mistake in letting Clyne go. I don’t understand why he did that.

“I know there was a couple of injuries afterwards but you don’t need to let him go, just keep him there.

“At the moment James Milner played there twice now.

“Watching him play right-back, you can’t quite believe he played left-back so well for so long. He looked like someone completely out of position.
