You never know when a terror attack would strike but it is wise to keep o the look out for any signs. Its better to be safe than sorry because extreme vigilance among in Kenya must be observed to protect you and the ones around you. The government has stepped up counter-terrorism measures, it has committed more resources to strengthen the security forces and even embraced international partnerships to suppress all manner of threats. However, with the subject at hand one, two or three measures cannot be enough.
The days of minding our own business are slowly fading away, vigilance is now not an option. These are some of the signs members of the public are advised to look out for in a bid to prevent a potential terror attack.
- Suspicious objects and items
Any unattended languages, items or objects left in public areas is a cause for alarm and authorities should be alerted; especially if the item of concern should be with electric wires sticking out, those with excessive usage of securing materials and those with stains or discoloration or emit an unusual odor.
2. Individuals with suspicious behavior
Beware of these suspicious characters with suspicious characteristics that suggest ulterior motive. We should be watchful for people who wear bulky or oversize clothes that may conceal hidden objects, placing an object or parcel in a crowded area and departing immediately, attempting to disguise their identity or loitering for an extended period of time at one location. You should also be careful over people who randomly take photos or video recordings of security features or asks specific questions concerning the security of a place or an individual without a reasonable explanation.
- Vehicles
In the modern world, vehicles are a common feature during terror attacks. Look out for vehicles circling an area repeatedly or on different occasions, a vehicle abandoned abruptly by the driver, overly weighted vehicles with sunken tires and suspensions and vehicles with foreign objects attached all present cause for alarm.
- Signs of Radicalization
It is imperative that you be on the lookout for people around you who express the belief that violence is justified or openly idolize, express support or sympathize with terrorists and their causes. Individuals trying to influence others to support terrorism or participate in terrorist activity as well as those displaying insignia or symbols in support of terrorist groups should also be immediately reported.
- Keep off suspicious objects
This is common in Kenya. The box could as well have been a booby trap and such response exposes many to the danger of an attack. It equally disturbs the crime scene, hampers emergency rescue efforts and police operations since movement becomes difficult. Members of the public are advised to move as far away as possible from such areas and report the incident.
