Why most Nairobi CCTV cameras are still not working

Nairobi County Roads and Public Works Chief Officer Fredrick Karanja has revealed that most of the surveillance CCTV cameras are not working.

26 out of the 42 cameras in Nairobi’s CBD are said to be defunct because the project is still under Chinese firm- M/s Nanjing LES Information Technology Limited- who the county is supposed to pay Sh7.2 million to repair the cameras and hand it over to the county government.

Appearing before the Nairobi County Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Mr. Karanja further revealed that the 26 cameras that are not working are installed in major roads such Moi Avenue, Uhuru Highway, Kenyatta Avenue and Tom Mboya Street.

The unprecedented revelation comes as the country has recently faced two terror attacks, at the Dusit D2 complex and Latema Road.

Initially, the project was conceptualised as a security project which would involve installation of security cameras, vehicle number plate recognition cameras, rehabilitation of signalised junctions and construction of one main control centre at Nairobi area police headquarters at Milimani and the redundant control centre at City Hall Annex.

The committee resolved to invite the contractor in its next sitting to shed more light on the issue.
