Ukay mall back to collect billions compensation fee from government after demolitions

When the government embarked on bringing down properties which were allegedly standing on public land questions were raised overwho authorised the legal onwning of the premises from the state’s side as most of the owners of the lands claimed to have legal ownership.

Well the demons have come back to haunt the government over the speedy mercyless demolitions.

For starters,Ukay centre owners have come out to demand Ksh2.3 billion compensation from the government over the demolition of the mall.

Kental Enterprise, the company behind the mall, has sued the government for Ksh.2.3 billion in damages.

The company maintains its building plans were approved by the then Nairobi City Council in 1994 and the demolition now constitutes compulsory acquisition of their piece of land, which necessitates compensation.

According to court papers, the developer of Ukay Center is demanding compensation for the demolition of the structure,a mall that sat on three plots of land the company values at Ksh.2.3 billion.

Else where in Kajiado Governor Joseph Lenku on Sunday called off a press conference in which he was to respond to Tata Chemicals Ltd’s demolition of county property.

The multinational soda ash mining company is embroiled in row with the county government over disputed Sh17 billion land rates.

On Saturday, the firm demolished “illegal structures” it claimed was put up by the county government on “its land”.
