Dispute over 15 Kenyan fishermen chained in Tanzania

Crossig the lineisproving to be a longterm battle after fifteen Kenyan fishermen were arrested on Thursday in the waters of Lake Victoria and detained in Sota Police Station, Tanzania for allegedly trespassing into the water borders of Tanzania.

The fishermen from Remba Island in Suba North, Homa Bay County had their fishing gears confiscated and their catch, worth millions of shillings taken away.

According to Homa Bay County Beach Management Units chairman, Edward Oremo, a team has been sent to Tanzania to solve the dispute and find a way to free the Kenyan counterparts.

Fishermen in Lake Victoria have subjected to different frustrations from the neighboring authorities over boundary trespassing.

The president spoke when he arrived back into Kenya from Arusha, Tanzania, where he attended the 20th Heads of State Summit of the East African Community.

On regional integration,he said  that governments in the East African Community are committed to ensuring the region becomes one entity without restrictions of internal boundaries.

“We will continue strengthening our ties (EAC countries) until the day we unite and our citizens become one and we no longer have border posts,” said the President when he spoke at the Namanga One-Stop Border Post.

He said it was time for Africa to take its destiny in its own hands and chart a peaceful future for its people.

The President encouraged the border communities to live in peace and to take advantage of the various EAC treaties and facilities to engage in cross border trade.
