Ranking the best January transfer deadline deals by Premier League clubs

Does Michy Batshuayi feature on our list?

The 2019 January transfer window may not be one we recollect too vividly in the future – Liverpool, Manchester City, and Manchester United remained curiously quiet – but for the avid football fan it still generated enough excitement on the final day with a whole heap of cross-club loan moves and brand-spanking new faces (and a fair few familiar ones) arriving in the Premier League.

Here are the best of the day’s dealings, ranked.

5. Håvard Nordtveit (Hoffenheim to Fulham, Loan)

Yes, not the most glamourous and the Norwegian may have failed to assert himself in the Premier League in his previous spell with West Ham but Fulham are in dire need of defensive reinforcements, having conceded the most goals and kept the fewest clean sheets thus far, and taking Nordveit on loan from Hoffenheim is certaining a step in the right direction for Claudio Ranieri’s side as they try and continue to trudge out of the relegation quagmire.

4. Michy Batshuyai (Chelsea to Crystal Palace, Loan

Officially confirmed just a quarter after midnight, Batshuayi’s short trip across London should prove to be great move for both Palace and player, and one that Chelsea may yet regret.  Yet it must be note, the Belgian’s previous loan spell at Valencia failed to set La Liga alight. For Chelsea, they could be pacifying a player long desiring field minutes, bagging a cool £1million for the Eagles for his services, and for a forward whom they’re still hesitant to depart Stamford Bridge for good.

3. Denis Suarez (Barcelona to Arsenal, Loan)

Gunners manager Unai Emery had apparently set the tone for the month by confirming early that Arsenal would be in a position unable to bring in new new faces for a whole load of bunce.

In a move has gone someway to appease fans, but also pads the pockets of of a Premier League rival as the former Manchester City Young Player of the Year Denis Suarez arrives at the Emirates  on a six-month loan deal from Barcelona, with the option to make the move permanent in the summer.

2. Miguel Almiron (Atlanta United to Newcastle United, £21M)

The jury’s still way out on which way this one will go, but Newcastle have been in desperate need of some legitimate fire-power, which hopefully comes in the form of Paraguayan player Miguel Almiron from Atlanta United. Finally Newcastle have broken their transfer record with the £21 million deal, eradicating Michael Owen to memory who held the long-standing ignominy for a mind-boggling 14 years. 24-year-old Almiron arrives with a burgeoning reputation from the MLS, with 12 goals and 13 assists in the last season.

1. Jonny Casto (Atletico Madrid to Wolverhampton Wanderers, £15M)

The Spanish defender made not be a new arrival but few signings this January will be as greeted with as much enthusiasm as Wolves will undoubtedly provide once Jonny takes the pitch again. The left-back has featured in 20 league games for Nuno Espirito Santo’s set-up since arriving at Molineux in the summer, missing just four consecutively through knee-injury, and has helped Wolves keep six clean sheets this season. Has joined the Black Country club on a permanent basis in a £15 million move from Atletico Madrid as a sign of intent for the aspiring Wolves side..
