Liverpool face a key game against Leicester City on Wednesday night as they continue their quest for a remarkable Premier League title win, but they could be without Virgil Van Dijk.

The Liverpool Echo are reporting that the big centre-back is a doubt for the game having missed a number of training sessions due to illness as the defensive crisis at the club continues to deepen.

The Liverpool squad has been decimated by injuries in defensive areas in recent weeks with Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold still on the sidelines and James Milner suspended after his red card in the last game against Palace.

Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren have also had spells on the sidelines in recent weeks as the Premier League season starts to bite and the news that Van Dijk could also be set to miss the game at Anfield could be a further blow.

The former Southampton star has been nothing short of sensational since arriving on Merseyside in January of last year with many believing the 27-year-old is the clear favourite to be the player of the year.

Liverpool have conceded just 13 goals all season, largely thanks to the Dutch captain, and the news that his illness could see him sit out this massive game will be a major boost to Claude Puel and his Leicester squad.

There is a shred of good news for Jurgen Klopp with Fabinho back in training and he could be set to fill ion at right-back having played in the position for Monaco and Brazil during his career.

The game against the Foxes could be a crucial one for the Reds ahead of the key part of the season with games against Man United and Bayern Munich on the horizon, and the faithful on the Kop will be hoping they can start the run of games with a big three points.
