Latema Explosion: Here is the warning US Embassy gave 48 hours earlier

The United States Embassy in Nairobi had warned of a planned terror attack in Kenya just two days prior the Latema-Tom Mboya explosion that occurred just a few minutes after 7.30 pm on Saturday night.

In a statement shared via Twitter, the Embassy urged members of the public to remain vigilant in public places such as malls and places of worship. Below is the full statement:

Security Alert – U.S. Embassy Nairobi (January 24, 2019)

Location:  Kenya, countrywide

Event:  The U.S. Embassy reminds the public of the continued need for sustained vigilance in public spaces such as shopping malls, hotels, and places of worship.

Actions to Take:

  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists/Westerners
  • Have travel documents up to date and easily accessible
  • Review your personal security plans

The explosion has left one person nursing injuries and is currently in hospital. He is believed to have been dupe into ferrying the device with his trolley to the Nairobi Cinema area. Police are however at the crime scene and are trying to control the situation. Members of the public are advised to keep away from the Nairobi CBD tonight. Stay safe!
