Barcelona make contact with Man United star

Barcelona have reportedly made contact with Juan Mata as they attempt to sign the out of favour Manchester United midfielder on a free transfer.

The Spanish playmaker has fallen down the pecking order under caretaker boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the Norwegian opting to utilise United’s pacey forwards in his revamped attack.

Mata, whose contract at Old Trafford expires this summer, is now said to be a target for La Liga champions Barcelona as they look to push through a pre-contract agreement.

According to Goal, the Catalan giants have already made contact with Mata’s representatives as they seriously consider a move for the former Chelsea and Valencia man.

It is claimed Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain are also keen on a free transfer for Mata this summer if he cannot agree terms on a new deal with United.

The Red Devils are in talks with Mata but so far there has been no breakthrough in negotiations. He is now able to sign a pre-contract agreement with clubs.

United made the most of a one-year extension in his current contract to keep him until July 2019 at the start of 2018.

He reportedly earns £140,000-a-week at Old Trafford but Barcelona are boosted by the fact they would have to pay no transfer fee on any deal.

Mata joined United from Chelsea in January 2014 and has gone to make 208 appearances for the club.

In his five years at the club, Mata has managed to score 44 goals and contributing 35 assists.
