Woman who procured insurance for vehicle used by Dusit attackers detained

A Nairobi court on Thursday allowed police more time to detain a woman who is accused of procuring insurance for two vehicles used by the attackers in the 14 Riverside Drive terror attack.

The court allowed detectives to detain Zipporah Wambui Karanja, an insurance agent, for 15 days pending conclusion of investigations into the matter.

According to court documents, one of the vehicles that was allegedly being used by one Ali Salim Gichunge alias Farouk and which was at the scene of the attack.

The second car was found in Muchatha area in Kiambu County at the alleged home of Gichunge.

Meanwhile, the court will on Friday, January 25 give directions on how an application by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) against six suspects arrested in connection with the 14 Riverside attack will proceed.

Trial Magistrate Martha Mutuku will rule on whether the prosecution will be granted seven days to reply to an affidavit filed by the suspects.

In the main application, the prosecution wants 30 days to detain the suspects pending conclusion of investigations, an application that has been opposed by the suspects’ lawyers.

The accused; Hassan Abdi Nur, Ismael Sadiq Abitham, Ali Khamisi Ali, Abdinoor Maalim Ismail, Abdullahi Mohamed Hassan and Sophia Njoki Mbogo were presented in court on Wednesday, January 23.
