It seems like the Kenyan teachers must fight for everything they deserve from the government. In their new war,the quest by 52,000 retired teachers to get Sh43 billion in salaries and pensions arrears has taken a new twist after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) disputed the amount.

The TSC has filed an application at the High Court in Nakuru seeking to have Chief Justice David Maraga constitute a bench comprising three or more judges to clarify the amount.

In the application dated November 3, 2018, the commission claims that the former teachers have inflated the amount payable, contrary to the court’s direction.

The commission says the amount should be Sh17 billion, and not Sh43 billion.

The former teachers, under Retired Teachers 1997 Group, say the government has been playing games with them in their efforts to get the money which was awarded to them by the court in 2008.

Their unpaid dues have been accruing interest at the rate of 14 per cent per annum since the initial judgement was made by Justice David Maraga on October 23, 2008 against the Teachers Service Commission.

The fight for their pension has been one that is bruising and deadly. More than 2,000 members have since died without tasting the fruits of their labour.
