There seems to be light at the end of the tunnel for Thika United after the Meru County government through the department of sports announced plans to buy it rebrand it as Meru United Football Club.

Sports CeC Daniel Kiogora says that the negotiations are at advanced stage expressing hope they’ll come to a consensus.

Kiogora said that with the completion of Kinoru Stadium, the team will have a good training field Wwhich will also double up as their home ground.

“Kinoru Stadium is almost complete now. We want to utilize this field and we have already identified a team to buy; we are negotiating with Thika United. It will not come here as Thika United but will be rebranded Meru United Football Club,” Kiogora hinted.

The CeC added that the move will help nurture young talents from the region, citing that there are many untapped talents at the grass roots.

“The team will not consist of foreigners. There are many of our youth who are very talented but they have no exposure. We will give first priority to these people whom we will sign contract with,” he explained.

Kiogora made the remarks at Mbirikene Primary School grounds in Nyaki East ward, Imenti North Sub County during a football tournament.

He also called on the county government to allocate more funds towards the sports department to encourage more to embrace sports as a career.
