Media Council CEO says early campaigns pose big threats to journalists

As efforts to cool down 2022 elections politics continue to hit the wall, hungry politicians have stepped up efforts to build new alliances as the race to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022 hots up.

The meetings are among political activities that have seen different players warm up to each other, signalling new political alliances and breaking up of old ones.

As the debate heats up the Media Council of Kenya is monitoring counties that are hostile to members of the press ahead of the 2022 general elections.

Speaking in Ol Kalou town, Nyandarua County, on Friday, Deputy Chief Executive Officer Victor Bwire noted that early campaigns pose big threats to journalists.

The council identified Nyandarua and Siaya counties as the most hostile to journalists.

On the other hand it’s difficult to talk about freedom of the media in Africa today, without talking about the worrying events happening in East Africa, particularly in Kenya and Tanzania.

Restrictions of and challenges to the media in these countries illustrate current declines in media freedom at the regional level, and reveal a level of hostility toward the media and contraction of civic space openly encouraged by leaders.

The MCK will also engage county bosses in helping journalists access correct information as part of efforts to improve their relationship.
