The 20-year-old has caught the eye in the Bundesliga after arriving from Dallas Juniors in 2016, chalking up 45 first-team appearances.

Liverpool are currently well-stocked in the midfield department though following the summer arrivals of Fabinho and Naby Keita, but McKennie’s versatility is attractive to Klopp.

Klopp is reportedly keen to snap up the American talent and, according to The Sun, is desperate to bring him to Merseyside.

McKennie has previously described his style as ‘win the ball and look to play it’, and the American has done that to great effect under Domenico Tedesco at the VELTINS-Arena.

He has also played in a more advanced midfield role than on international duty and can even be deployed at centre back in a three or four-man defence.

Klopp is currently well-stocked in the midfield but McKennie can also play in central defence

McKennie’s potential to play in defence would mean he could act as cover during Liverpool’s ongoing injury crisis as they look to win a first Premier League title.

The Reds are currently without Dejan Lovren, Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold through injury, while Nathaniel Clyne left to go on loan to Bournemouth earlier this month. Joel Matip has also a poor record with injuries.

In September 2017, McKennie penned a new deal at Schalke that runs until 2022 but Liverpool are confident they can strike a deal in the region of £20m.

Liverpool are currently four points clear at the top of the Premier League table and host Crystal Palace at Anfield on Saturday.
