GUARDS MANNING public places to carry firearms while on duty after fresh training and vetting, authorities say.The guards will then be required to return the guns after the end of shift with plans being put in place to create a central center where they will be stored.

This debate started long time ago but with the recent Dusit attack more weight has been added on it and it has come to pass.

The incidences of Traffic Police officers being attacked by civilians on several occasions triggered the whole debate of equipping them with fire arms.

With the new police reforms , the National Police Service intends at training the guards manning the public places and equip them with the necessary skills before they could be registered as gun handlers.

I think this is a bright move as long as the right training is made and enough measures are put in place to ensure that they serve the intended purpose. In case of an attack like the recent Dusit terror attack, guards did not have means to defend themselves and even try deal with the attackers. But by arming even one will be a good move to combat such incidences.
