A Ghanaian undercover journalist who helped expose corruption in African football has been shot dead in the capital Accra, police said Thursday.

Ahmed Husein was part of a team led by award-winning journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas whose undercover investigation led to the banning of some football referees and officials.

Ahmed Hussein-Suale was on his way home when he was shot by gunmen who were on a motorbike. He was shot twice and confirmed dead on arrival to hospital.

Suale was a lead investigator on Anas’ investigative organization Tiger Eye PI that has been behind many exposés, including the piece on corruption in African football that aired in 2018 and resulted in a host of officials including Kenya’s very own referee Aden Marwa being banned from the game for life.

Reacting to Suale’s death, Anas who is known as the master of disguise due to his use of prosthetic masks, wigs and other paraphernalia to cover his identity, remained steadfast in his cause insisting that his organization “will not be silenced” as well as posting a short video showing a Member of Parliament advocating for the use of violence on Suale and his colleagues after the football corruption exposé aired.

No links have however been drawn between the MP and Wednesday evening’s occurrence.
