MANCHESTER UNITED’S defence is still weak under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and teams will expose them. That is the opinion of Liverpool legend and pundit John Aldridge.
The Red Devils are back in full force after six wins on the bounce, with the latest coming against Tottenham at Wembley. No United manager has ever managed to win their first six games in a row and Solskjaer has the chance to extend it when Brighton visit Old Trafford this weekend.
But it is a huge contrast from the return fixture, where Spurs ran riot at Old Trafford with Jose Mourinho in charge. The Old Trafford outfit are a million miles away from the gloomy days under The Special One.
But United are not out of the woods yet and find themselves six points behind Chelsea, who are fourth in the Premier League. Furthermore, they form has not been backed to continue when teams finally exploit United’s defence, according to Aldridge.
David de Gea was called upon to keep Spurs out, making 11 saves in the process, as the Red Devils’ defence was frequently overrun. And Aldridge believes that United rode their luck at times at the weekend and teams will eventually punish them.
“United don’t have defensive quality to compare to the teams around them at the top and even though they scraped a win against Spurs on Sunday, their defenders were shown up once again,” Aldridge told Independent.ie.
“They rode their luck to get that victory, but the defensive problems that have been an issue all season have not disappeared and it means they may well slip up in games when we least expect it.”
