PSV live-wire winger could be Ole Gunnar’s first signing as Manchester United manager

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could make PSV winger Steven Bergwijn his first signing as Manchester United interim manager.

The 21-year-old is being watched by United scouts as Solskjaer seeks to bolster his squad in the January transfer window. He is talked about in the Netherlands as an old fashioned winger with plenty of pace – something that Solskjaer would welcome as he seeks to improve the supply line for Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial who are increasingly being used as strikers rather than wide players.

The Sun says Bergwijn is high on United’s wishlist and Solskjaer wants the player watched twice before a bid is made. Despite only being United’s interim manager, Solskjaer is likely to be allowed to spend this month as the club looks to mount a late season surge for a top-four spot as both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur stutter.

Already today, Marouane Fellaini has been linked with a move away from United to generate additional funds to give the Norwegian some buying power.

Bergwijn can play on either wing and representatives from United will watch him against FC Emmen and Groningen. PSV currently lead the Eredivisie table and Bergwijn has netted nine times as well as providing seven assists in only six games.

The player was reportedly a target for Liverpool last season though they didn’t make a move for him. PSV are not looking to sell the player at this stage in the season but they may find it hard to resist a decent offer.
