Ivory Coast defender arrested in the UK following suspected assult

Serge Aurier has been at Spurs since 2017. How much longer, remains to be seen.

Tottenham Hotspur versus Manchester United in Gameweek 22 certainly delivered for the neutral, and it was the Red Devils who walked away the happier; a Marcus Rashford strike and an astonishing goalkeeping display from David De Gea proving the difference to allow the visitors to waltz off with all three points.

However, it has now been revealed there may have been another factor that resulted in defeat for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, which has seen them slink further out of their already tentative Premier League title challenge.

Spurs defender Serge Aurier had been arrested on suspicion of assault in what the Daily Mail is referring to as a ‘late night bust-up’ with his partner, mere hours before his side were due to welcome Man Utd to Wembley.

Though the Ivory Coast international strongly denies assault and was released without charge by the police, Aurier consequently did not feature at all in Pochettino’s matchday squad to face United, making it six games on the bounce that he hasn’t taken to the field.

In a rut in which Spurs fans are currently set to seeing talisman Harry Kane sidelined through injury until March, and resigned to watching Son Heung-min compete in the Asia Cup with the South Korea national side, Aurier’s arrest couldn’t have come at a worst time to provoke unstable Lilywhite emotions.

This is not the first time the defender has found himself at the centre of trouble.

In 2016 he had to miss a Champions League fixture with Arsenal whilst playing for former team Paris Saint-Germain after being denied entry to the United Kingdom for assaulting a police officer. In the same year, he failed a breathalyzer test and was sentenced to two months in prison, overturned on appeal.

And Spurs fans’ patience seems to have been tested a little too far with the 26-year-old, particularly with the majority still smarting from conceding the three points to United at home, and took to social media to express their outrage about Aurier’s behaviour.
