How Anthony Martial’s Mood Has Changed Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Return

Manchester United star Martial wanted to leave back in the summer after growing tired of Jose Mourinho’s treatment of him.

The France international had endured two years of turbulence under the 55-year-old and, with Bayern Munich, Chelsea, PSG and Arsenal all linked, a move away seemed to be in the offing.

Ultimately, the Manchester United board refused to let Martial go and have since triggered a one-year extension clause in his current contract.

The forward has blown hot and cold this season, scoring nine goals, but has looked sharper since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s appointment.

And sources claim Martial is happier at United than he was earlier in the campaign.

The France international is now established as a regular.

Under Solskjaer he has improved, forging a terrific understanding with Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard up top.

For now, Martial, Rashford and Lingard appear to be Solskjaer’s preferred United attack.

But Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez are still expected to receive plenty of game time between now and the end of the campaign.

Meanwhile, United hero Darren Fletcher was impressed by Solskjaer’s use of Martial and Rashford in the 1-0 win over Tottenham on Sunday.

Both players caused plenty of problems for Spurs’ defensive rearguard during the Wembley win.

And Fletcher said: “The first half is a tactical masterclass. The plan early on in the game was to run into the channels and turn Spurs around.

“Every opportunity they got the ball they looked to exploit the space.

“They were taking the game to Spurs early in the first half.

“They did it because Spurs’ full backs like to play high and wide.

“So their plan was for Martial and Rashford to stay wide and run in the channels either side of Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen. They did it all day.

“No defender wants to be left two v two against Martial, Rashford and Lingard because they have got pace, they have got ability and they are dangerous.”
