Zimbabwe shuts down internet amid rising death toll

The situation in Zimbabwe is turning out to be more worse than ever. The government has stamped its authority and blocked the internet access in the country.

Most people took out on the streets to protests the hiking of fuel prices by the authorities. The protests turned violent as police started firing live bullets to protestors, leading to a massive death poll which the government officials have failed to disclose to the public.

The internet remained the only option from the streets which were wild. But right now it is a complete darkness in Zimbabwe.

“Zimbabwe ‘is open for business’ but closed to information flow and free expression.”

This is the tagline used to criminalize the people of Zimbabwe from speaking out.

It seems the interruptions started shortly after midnight with a number of service providers having flipped the switch and internet access now being limited. Other providers such as NetOne and ZOL haven’t completely turned off the access but they have blocked WhatsApp and Facebook.

Econet being the biggest provider of connectivity effectively means at least 65% of all Zimbabweans can’t access the internet anymore. This happened at around 0845 hours (CAT) today 15th January. So far other mobile network providers have blocked WhatsApp and Facebook but Econet has blocked the whole internet from being accessible.
