All fifty Form One students failed to report to Arabia Girls Secondary school in Mandera County during day of admission.

The principal of the school Mr Issa Yarrow stated that the students never reported to school despite some picking up their admission letter.

“We were given 50 students during Form One selections in Garissa but none has showed up including the four who picked admission forms,” remarked Yarrow.

Yarrow pointed out that the school was ready to receive students who came as far as from Kilifi County and Kibra in Nairobi.

The population of the school for this year stands at 55 students despite having a total capacity of 180 students.

“The school opened on time but only 55 girls reported with only four teachers present to teach this first term,” remarked the principal.

Insecurity issues were cited by County Director of Education Abdihamid Maalim as the reason to the problem facing the school.

The concerned principal, highlighted that the school would be forced to take students who scored below 150 marks during last year’s KCPE examinations in order to avert the closure of the institution.

The admission of the students that ended on Friday saw 50,420 students approved for change of schools through the Ministry of Education’s National Education Management Information System (Nemis).

As part of the initiative to ensure the government’s effort of attaining complete transition to secondary schools is achieved, Education PS Belio Kipsang noted that more information would be provided in regards to the total number of students who reported to school.

The government had banned a second selection for students and instead revealed that those who had not taken up their places in the various secondary schools would be placed in institutions with vacancies next week.
