Reports from Italy this morning appear to suggest that Chelsea’s move for Gonzalo Higuain has stalled.

The Argentinian striker, currently on loan at AC Milan from Juventus, is reportedly a target for Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri and the pair worked together previously at Napoli.

Sarri is desperate for more firepower in front of goal with Alvaro Morata likely to be loaned or sold during the transfer window. Sevilla appeared well placed to land the former Real Madrid striker earlier this week but the talks have hit complications according to Guillem Balague who tweeted: “Sevilla gives up on the possibility of Morata joining them this transfer window. The terms imposed by #chelsea make it impossible.”

Gianluca di Marzio of Sky Sports Italy is quoted today as saying that Juventus would gain nothing from allowing Higuain to join Chelsea given the player is already on loan at AC Milan. This could change if a permanent deal was on the table but as he explains, the current potential arrangement “doesn’t make sense.”

“Marca came out with an article that gives impetus to the passage to Chelsea of Higuain,” said di Marzio. “We have not found any evidence, confirming that Sarri would like or that Chelsea have made a decision on this investment.

“Moreover, Milan has no intention of letting Higuain go because it would be difficult to replace it. Milan would not make money from the sale of Higuain but will not take the loan.

“To date, Milan knows that Higuain had problems but made him understand that if he remains he must play and take responsibility. It is clear that Juventus would have the interest in doing the operation with Chelsea but only if Chelsea redeemed him at the end of the season.

“Juventus would rather than see the player go back at the end of the season.”
