Chelsea’s image of ‘offside’ Harry Kane
Following Tottenham’s 1-0 Carabao Cup win over Chelsea, the Blues questioned the validity of VAR.
VAR was used to determine whether Harry Kane was offside in the build-up to the only goal of the game.
When Chelsea’s Maurizio Sarri returned to the tunnel after the match, one Chelsea analyst ‘showed’ how Kane was offside before he won Spurs a penalty.
Sarri duly told the press: “Our camera was in line with Harry Kane, it was offside.”
Two reasons why Chelsea’s image isn’t credible
The Times have dug into the differences between Chelsea’s image versus the image rendered by VAR regarding the Kane offside call.
The paper have spoken to “a source close to the Professional Games Match Officials Ltd, the body of elite referees”, to understand if Chelsea had a point.
Two reasons have been tabled for why Chelsea’s image shouldn’t be relied upon:
Chelsea’s angle was not definitive and the snapshot was taken after the ball had been played and not when it was played.
The source said the ball is blurred in Chelsea’s picture of the incident indicating that an earlier frame would have been more accurate.
The line the club analyst used to indicate Kane was offside may also not have been accurate if the angle of the shot was not properly calibrated.
