Sir Alex Ferguson is poised to reprise his role as Manchester United manager in a repeat of the iconic 1999 Champions League final against Bayern Munich in May.
The Nou Camp 20 years ago played host to one of the most famous nights in United’s steeped history when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, now in the post which Ferguson held for 26 years, turned home a stunning winner to secure a stunning treble.
And now, according to The Sun, United are trying to organise a reboot of that tie, which United eventually won 2-1, on May 26 this year – exactly 20 years to the day.
United and Bayern both hope to lure back as many players as possible to play the exhibition match – and it is claimed Ottmar Hitzfeld likely to be in the opposing dugout once again.
Ferguson, who won 38 trophies during his tenure as boss at Old Trafford, has been approached about taking the reigns once again.
The Scot, 77, suffered a brain haemorrhage last May but has made steady progress in recovery.
He has resumed his role as a club director and ambassador and it is understood he has agreed to take on the role in the reprise of the 1999 final should he be in good health.
Solskjaer, the hero on that night in Barcelona, has made an incredible start to life as manager of Manchester United – winning his first five games in charge by a margin of two goals or more.
The Norwegian invited his former boss to the United training complex over the festive period and The Sun claim Ferguson had some inspiring words for the players.
The United great will have to channel that once again come May should he inspire his class of ’99 to another victory over a star-studded Bayern squad.
In that famous final, United fell behind early to an early Mario Basler free-kick, which wrong-footed Peter Schmeichel in goal.
And after 91 painful minutes for the Red Devils, it was the substitutes who did the damage – both from David Beckham corners.
Teddy Sheringham turned home Ryan Giggs’s scuffed shot in the 91st minute before Solskjaer completed the emphatic turnaround when he poked home just two minutes later, sending the United faithful into delirium.
It is also understood the referee from that night, the legendary Pierluigi Collina, has also been asked about reprising his role for the Old Trafford re-run in May.
